LOONEY TUNES licensing art - BUGS, ELMER, SYLVESTER inking samples

Here are a couple of LOONEY TUNES licensing character art pieces that I inked for Warner Bros. Consumer Products. The pencil art for both pieces was done by the very talented Mike Fontanelli. I used a Winsor & Newton Series 7 #3 brush with Ultradraw black india ink. I did the inkings on duralene that was placed over photocopies of Mike's drawings. These pieces were done for the Looney Tunes style guide, THE JOKE'S ON YOU! I wanted to show you the pencil art next to the finished inked art so you can see the "before and after" process. Remember to click on each image for a larger view. I've got a lot of licensing character art inkings that I am going to be posting on my blog in the near future. You're going to see HANNA-BARBERA, RANKIN/BASS and more LOONEY TUNES licensing character art inkings. I enjoy hearing your thoughts and comments about my blog! You can e-mail me at powsley@flash.net . Thanks!

MICKEY MOUSE licensing art

Here's a few of the MICKEY MOUSE inkings that I did for Disney Consumer Products in London. I'm not sure who did the pencil art, but I used a Winsor & Newton Series 7 #3 brush with Ultradraw black india ink on duralene. I touched up the inkings with white opaque watercolor. I'll post more of the MICKEY MOUSE inkings later. Click on each image for a larger view!

CHARLIE-IN-THE-BOX

Here's a piece I did a few years ago for the book, RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER: THE MAKING OF THE RANKIN/BASS HOLIDAY CLASSIC by Rick Goldschmidt. It's CHARLIE-IN-THE-BOX from the Island of Misfit Toys. The book is a must-have for any fan of RANKIN/BASS Productions. Rick's a good friend and has always helped promote my cartoon art through his various projects. You can order a copy of the book directly from Rick through his website http://www.rankinbass.com/. Be sure to check out Rick's Rankin/Bass blog at http://www.enchantedworldofrankinbass.blogspot.com/.

IN MAGOO WE TRUST

If you haven't already, you should pick up the DVD, UNCLE SAM MAGOO. It's a nicely written and animated MAGOO special from 1970. JIM BACKUS voices UNCLE SAM MAGOO as he meets America's real and folk heroes from the founding of the new world to the landing on the moon! Classic Media produced this DVD with Sony Wonder. Incidentally, Classic Media was recently purchased by Entertainment Rights of the UK. Perhaps ER will release THE MR. MAGOO SHOW, the complete DVD collection of the 1960s TV show. The set was produced by Classic Media but has yet to be released.

I created the above art of UNCLE SAM MAGOO for the DVD cover. I'm also posting a very cool 1960s advertisement for MR. MAGOO on WGN-TV Chicago. It's from a Chicago regional TV guide.

Christmas...

CLICK TO ENLARGE (it'll look better).
Christmas 2006 has snook up on me yet again. I was panic shopping today. Lots of other people were also doing the same. I must have spent most of my time in a Que, waiting to pay for all the stuff I was trying to buy. Damn those unorganised people. They were getting in my way. I hate shopping at normal times. I really hate shopping this time of year.
The cartoons may not be produced as frequently over the next week or so, but I will post a few times over the holiday season. I have some Christmas themed cartoons planned for the next few days, then things will probably dry up for a while.
In other news - I've been banned from House Price Crash forum, for daring to mention the other forum, and calling them Nazis (after provocation from their rude behaviour) on Global House Price Crash Forum. Sorry HPC, but you ain't going to censor me. I'll say what I like about you in other places.
HPC, is possibly the most over controlled, excessively moderated, and unpleasant forum out there. It's full of control freaks, and they have zero interest in anything other then their own agenda. The mods seem to feel they have real power over people - but c'mon, get real, it's just a forum. They drive as many people away as they attract.
Global House Price Crash - is quite the opposite - friendly, encourages healthy debate, and confident enough not to be afraid of any mention of the other forum.

Blowing Bubbles

House prices are at their highest ever in the UK. Some people think that we are experiencing a massive bubble, that sooner or later will burst, and leave many people in serious financial trouble. Others feel that this time, house prices will just continue to increase upwards forever, and no matter how much debt you get into, buying a house will give you vast amounts of equity for little or no effort.
We shall see. If you're interested in following the debates on House Prices, here's the best forum for discussing this topic.

A Christmas Story for people having a bad day....

A Christmas Story for people having a bad day....
When four of Santa's elves got sick, the trainee elves did not produce
toys as fast as the regular ones, and Santa began to feel the
pre-Christmas pressure.

Then Mrs. Claus told Santa her Mother was coming to visit, which stressed
Santa even more.
When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were
about to give birth and two others had jumped the fence and were out,
Heaven knows where.

Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the floorboards cracked, the
toy bag fell to the ground and all the toys were scattered.
So, frustrated, Santa went in the house for a cup of apple cider and a
shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered the elves had
drunk all the cider and liquor.
In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider jug, and it broke
into hundreds of little glass pieces all over the kitchen floor.
He went to get the broom and found the mice had eaten all the straw off
the end of the broom.

Just then the doorbell rang, and irritated Santa marched to the door,
yanked it open, and there stood a little angel with a great big Christmas
tree.

The angel said very cheerfully, "Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't this a
lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to
stick it?"
And so began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas
tree

I Hate My Job

Toilet cistern leaking this morning. That's no excuse for a bad cartoon. Ice everywhere out the back of the house. Water from overflow is freezing - creating our own personal ice rink. How very Christmassy

JOE BARBERA - 1911-2006

JOE BARBERA passed away today from natural causes. He was 95. THANKS for all of the great cartoon fun, Mr. Barbera! The above photo is from the front page of THE HANNA-BARBERA EXPOSURE SHEET, the Hanna-Barbera studio's newsletter. The July 1967 newsletter was announcing the studio's 10th anniversary. I think we all feel a little like the above FRED FLINTSTONE does. Check my December 7 posting "REAL TV CARTOON PRODUCERS!" about BILL HANNA and JOE BARBERA. Be sure to click on the images to enlarge.

Homes Left Empty

Thousands of new homes are being left empty deliberately in cities as investors cash in on rising house prices and a high level of building encouraged by the Government, a study has found.

At a time of acute shortage of affordable housing for first-time buyers, a significant number of homes, particularly flats in apartment blocks, are unoccupied.

Investors prefer to leave starter homes empty and make their money from the rise in the property market rather than letting them out to tenants who may damage kitchen and bathroom fittings and cause wear and tear that requires costly redecoration.

SHOESHINE BOY and UNDERDOG

The other day, I saw this posting about the upcoming live-action UNDERDOG movie here, http://www.aintitcool.com/node/30961. I'll let you make up your own mind about this treatment of a sensational 1960s TV cartoon hero, but it looks awful to me! Aside from being live-action, the dog doesn't even look like UNDERDOG. I'm posting a piece of SHOESHINE BOY and UNDERDOG that I did for the current UNDERDOG style guide. I think a lot of UNDERDOG fans will agree with me when I say that THIS is how UNDERDOG should appear on the big screen. Wouldn't it be great to see an animated movie that looks (and sounds) like the classic 1960s UNDERDOG TV show?

Secret Satan

satan santa devil christmas cartoonIt's an old joke - but what the hell, it's Christmas soon enough!

The Haunted Ship (1930)

Well, it's time for another weird Van Beuren cartoon from 1930. "The Haunted Ship", released on 27th April (my birthday ;-) is a real classic of the spooky and surreal early '30s style. I'd even compare it with the best Fleischer cartoons of the similar kind. Animation is certainly above the average Van Beuren standard of that time. This is also the first cartoon that featured two obscure characters named Waffles the Cat and Don Dog. Only three more cartoons were made, before Waffles and Don morphed into the well known human duo called Tom & Jerry.

Note: as you probably know, Van Beuren "Tom & Jerry" were a pair of humans, and they are in no way related to the famous Hanna-Barbera cat & mouse. You can find a complete filmography and lot of info about VB Tom & Jerry and their precursors HERE.
