Don't take this seriously...

This week's entry in the forum contest. Posted with minutes to spare.

Can't go on.

Saturday, February 19, 2011

I've been expecting this.

This week's entry, and guess what? A very similar entry from DC1. Bugger. Oh well. It's something that's always going to happen I suppose. There's a shark in my version. Perhaps that'll be enough to edge ahead.

Happy Valentine's Cartoon.

The theme for this week's cartoon was set by Tim Cordell, who won last week's contest. Was it a theme or a caption? I can't remember, so I've gone with a caption (in a bubble - which I don't often do). It was of course "Happy Valentine's Day". It must have been a caption. Quite a tricky one I thought. Initially I thought of machine guns, violin cases, gangsters, but I'm almost 73% certain that someone else will come up with that, and can probably draw a better gangster anyway - so I went with this idea. Quite pleased with the "sketchy" appearance of this cartoon. All done with the Cintiq of course. Getting more confident using it all the time.

Contest is here if you'd like to enter yourself. You can only vote if you are a member with at least 10 posts, or you have entered a contest.

and the Award goes to...

Two cartoons this week. Same gag, just two different drawings of the same gag. Can't post both versions on the contest page, so I thought I'd post them both here.

The first cartoon is the one I posted. Don't think I'll get many points, having seen the other entries. There's one that screams to me winner, but the voting is a strange thing. Of course before the voting closes I won't comment any further.

Shit Ventriloquist Cartoon.

I had the idea for this cartoon really early in the week. Just needed to find time between contributing towards the Vets Maserati with personal plates fund, and taking official ownership of Riley. Lots of Gottle in this week contest. The theme was set as Ventriloquist. Another word I can't believe I can spell without help from the spell checker. It's a Scottish thing.

This time I did it quicker, but is it any better?

I re-drew the cartoon from today's contest. Not allowed to post it of course, but this time took a lot less time, if you know what I mean. The colour version took ages to be honest, and I was not happy with the end results of the drawing, so this took me literally no time at all (well, OK - about 10 minutes, if that). The colour version wouldn't be any good for marketing anyway, as very few places will take full colour cartoons. Well here's another version. Please note: This is the same joke, just a new drawing of it. Based on a theme of "desert Island". From the contest and what not. Posted here and nowhere else. Enjoy. Goodnight.

Just Deserts.

This week's contest was set by last weeks winner, Roger Kettle. The theme was "Desert Island". Wide open this week. I like to think I've stuck to the traditional approach to the themed contests, and not used some witty caption to win a crackerjack pencil, but all the others have cheated (with a few exceptions!). It's a classic cliché for cartoonists. I could have saved myself a lot of time and reuse one of the other desert island gags I've got, but I thought I'd do something new. Without a caption. Because it's a theme.

Just when you thought you'd seen it all....

This week's entry in the caption contest. It's actually the second cartoon I drew for it, but I'm only allowed to enter one cartoon. I'll post the other cartoon when the contest closes on Monday evening.

A cartoon that I forgot to post.

I forgot to post this cartoon in last weeks cartoon caption contest. Had it all drawn and ready to go, and then missed the deadline. How stupid of me! Never mind. At least posting it on here I'll be able to witness the strange phenomena of Feedburner numbers going down every time I post something on here. 107 readers at the moment, but strangely this will now drop to about 70 for a while.

Ho! Ho! Ooooooooohhhhhhhhh!

Here's the special Christmas entry on the CCGB forum thingy. They wouldn't let me post it at Easter for some reason. Have a great Christmas everyone, and thanks for reading the blog over the last year. Probably the last entry this year, so Happy New Year as well. Here's to 2011!

Elf 'n' Safety, innit!

This week's entry in the contest. Have been playing around with Photoshop brushes, as suggested by the very helpful members of the Cartoonist Forum. I'm still on the look out for some really 'inky' type of brushes. Maybe something that replicates a dip pen, or something like that, so if you have any suggestions where I can find such brushes, please let me know.

Prancing on Ice.

I haven't been able to do much in the way of cartooning over the last couple of weeks. I'm not entirely sure what I've been so busy doing, but I do know it all got a little hectic back there for a time. I have removed the dust from the Cintiq and given the cartoon contest another go. As usual, I didn't have a clue what to draw, until I started drawing it. Always good to be inspired by what's around you, and there's nothing more funny than an old lady falling over on some ice (as long as she's not injured of course). In fact anyone falling over is nearly always amusing for those not involved in the whole falling over business. But be good. Stop giggling, and lend a hand, if this really does happen anywhere near you!

Lost Properly...

Another week over and another cartoon for the caption contest at the cartoonist forum. I say caption contest, for that's what it is this week. After a glut of a contest where a theme with an optional caption was set, and some got upset about this and refused to take part - we seem to have come back to the original idea of the contest. Set a caption and draw a cartoon to go with it. It's a fun challenge and one that I look forward to taking part in every week. If I don't draw anything else that week, at least I know that nearly most times I will be drawing a cartoon for this contest every Saturday.

Pagans can't be trusted.

A cartoon I drew this week to illustrate a problem someone I know was having with the Scouting Organisation. He wants to be a Scout leader, they don't want Pagans in their movement. Obviously Pagans cannot be trusted to teach anyone about the natural world, survival skills and other such matters that only apply to God fearing Christians and other mainstream religions! To be fair, it looks like they might have back-tracked somewhat, since this became and issue.

Stupid Invention.

This weeks entry in the cartoonist contest. Have been far too busy to get busy with the Cintiq this week! Phew. Idea came to me at the last minute. Hopefully this will win simply because people want a traditional contest next week, which I have promised if I win! Which probably eliminates this from winning because then people will just think it was voted for because they wanted a traditional contest set for the following week, and not because they liked the cartoon at all, which won't do my confidence much good at all. What have I done?

Halloween Cartoon

That time of the week again. Another Cartoon Caption contest over at the cartoonist forum. Only the caption element has been relaxed somewhat. The theme was set as Halloween, with the option to add a caption if you wanted to. Getting more comfortable using the Cintiq now. I have made Windows Vista look crap in the name of performance.  Working on 100MB files with multiple layers is straining my system a little. I just love the way the Cintiq performs at 600 dpi

Found lots of unpublished cartoons (that's a polite way of saying rejected) that I might publish over the next few weeks. So it won't just be caption contest entries.

Disappointing cartoon.

This week's entry in the caption contest. At last I have sorted out my computer, and now have the Cintiq connected via the proper DVI connector, and the monitor connected via the VGA. I even have an extended desktop - although that sounds flash, and very technical, the software that came with the graphics card made it very easy to configure. If anyone would like to buy the VGA splitter that I bought to fudge together a solution, just let me know!
