Above: a 2008 cover by Richard Thompson to a 2008 Nickelodeon Magazine's comics section.
Mike Rhode, writing for the Washington City Paper, chats with his friend Richard Thompson about cartooning.
It's a great interview, and Richard talks about his career, as well as things he would like to do maybe someday (an illustrated version of CANDIDE!). Within the space of two questions he tackles writer's block and the future of the comics industry. Here are Mike and Richard:
WCP: What do you do when you're in a rut or have writer's block?
RT: Wash dishes, putter around, reread old strips I've done to find the rhythm. Grind my teeth and go back to work.
WCP: What do you think will be the future of your field?
RT: I think we'll be operating in some kind of street-corner/door-to-door business model, maybe in those two empty parking spaces by the dumpster, or more ideally, in a van off Route 50 next to the guys who sell fresh flowers and hubcaps.
Richard's new collection of CUL DE SAC comic strips, SHAPES AND COLORS, is out now.
